Movie Moment

A designer, her cat and thousands of movies

Posted

My favorite question to answer is “what are you doing later?” Mainly because my answer stays the same — I don’t know, probably watching a movie with my cat.

I have seen over 2,300 movies — yes, I keep track. For those of you wondering what that breaks down to, it is specifically 4,013 hours or 167 days. I can go on about my movie watching statistics, but I’ll spare you all the little details.

To give you a little background about what kind of movie watcher I am, I’ll give you the gist of my stats. My top watched genres are comedy, drama and horror. My most watched actor is Adam Sandler and my most watched director is Steven Spielberg.

I clearly have a problem with watching too many movies, so, I had a thought - why not share my takes on movies with you? I want to officially welcome you to Movie Moment, where I will be giving you recommendations and honest reviews on some of the best and worst movies I have watched.

To introduce you into this column series, I wanted to start with my top five movies, starting with number five.

The Trial of the Chicago 7”

Directed by Aaron Sorkin, this movie is based on a true story of one of the most notorious trails in history. I won’t spoil anything for you, but this movie was directed in one of the most beautiful ways possible, taking the time to include some of the most important details. If you have two hours to spare and subscribe to Netflix, I would recommend giving this movie a watch any day of the week

Inception”

Honestly, if you haven’t seen this movie, you have to. Christopher Nolan makes some of the best films out there and this one, in my opinion, is his greatest. The visual effects are stunning and so is Leonardo DiCaprio’s acting. Over 2.77 million people on Letterboxd have seen this movie and there is no doubt that you should join the club. I am not giving you any more information, because this is a movie you just have to see for yourself.

The Fallout”

This one is a bit heavy and might not be suitable for all audiences, but it’s an important watch. Women directed, Megan Park captures a student’s confusing healing process after a school tragedy. With school shootings and mass shootings still being a driving reason for deaths in America, “The Fallout” touched my heart and changed my perspective on life and it may just do the same for you.

The Conjuring 2”

This movie is not for everyone, but I have to put it out there — this is the best Conjuring Universe movie there is. I have seen this movie 16 times in the last year and a half. I try to watch it once a month, reminding myself that good horror does still exist. Valak never fails to make my skin crawl. I will eventually write an in depth review on this movie, so I will end with this today — most of James Wan’s movies are sent from the heavens, so never miss out on a single one.

The Great Gatsby” (2013)

This might be the most controversial one on my list, but I stand by it. I am a Leonardo DiCaprio fan and I loved the book growing up. No, this movie isn’t the most perfect film to exist, but I could watch it thousands of times and never get tired of it. The music is phenomenal, the scenes are carefully crafted and the costumes are beyond me. If you liked the book, I think you will enjoy this watch.
